These distinctive tropical birds have two official names, Pied Imperial Pigeons (PIPs) or Torresian Imperial Pigeons (TIPs), plus familiar names Torres Strait Pigeons, Nutmeg Pigeons, and many indigenous language names. For formal taxonomy see here.
PIPs/TIPs are native to coastal areas of northern Australia and also found in nearby countries further North. Tropical Queensland hosts the large majority of PIPs/TIPs during the breeding season. To date the Queensland birds have been the main focus of our research and conservation efforts.
